NITI Aayog, the government's policy think tank, published a report in June 2022 on India's gig and platform economy. It said India then had about 77 lakh (7.7 million) gig workers and projected that number to reach about 2.35 crore (23.5 million) by 2029-30, roughly three times higher.

What the report says

How to read it

This is a projection from 2022, not a count of today's gig workers. Another report quoted by the Tribune said the gig economy could employ over one crore workers in 2024-25. Counts differ because there is no single agreed definition of who is a gig worker.
