The rupee fell 7 paise to 95.22 against the US dollar in early trade on 27 October 2026, PTI reports. It has fallen for three sessions in a row and lost 77 paise in that time.
Why the rupee is falling
The reasons given are high crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty, a stronger dollar ahead of the US Federal Reserve's decision, and continued selling by foreign investors. Foreign investors sold net equities worth Rs 1,462 crore on Monday. Brent crude was at $114.76 a barrel, near a six-month high. Analysts linked higher oil prices to Houthi-led attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure.
Oil at a 15-year high
India's crude oil basket averaged about $120 a barrel in October, the highest since March 2012, according to the report of 26 October. It cites industry estimates that diesel under-recoveries, which are losses oil companies take when pump prices do not rise, have reached about Rs 20 per litre.
Inflation and interest rates
Wholesale price inflation rose to 11.4% in September 2026. The report says the RBI has raised its retail inflation projection to 5.2% and the repo rate to 5.5%.
