Based on figures cited by Shankar IAS Parliament from a 2026 BCG and ACMA report. Summarised in our own words.
A study by BCG and ACMA (the auto component makers' association) from 2026, as cited by a current-affairs explainer, estimates that the Pune auto cluster needs about 27,000 new skilled workers every year. The same source says ITIs, polytechnics and Automotive Skills Development Council centres together produce only about 5,000 relevantly trained candidates a year.
Why the gap matters
- Automobile production is projected to rise from 30 to 35 million units in FY25 to 50 to 55 million by 2030.
- Factories need operators, fitters, welders, quality checkers and maintenance staff.
- If training centres cannot supply enough people, companies compete for the trained workers they can find.
What this means for a young worker
If you live near an auto cluster, such as Pune, Chennai, Gurugram, Aurangabad or Hosur, a recognised trade certificate can help you get into a plant. The figures above are for Pune only, but the shortage of trained people is a national topic.
- Look at ITI trades like fitter, machinist, welder and mechanic motor vehicle.
- Check the Automotive Skills Development Council for approved training centres.
- Apprenticeships let you earn while you learn. See our guide on apprenticeships.
