Based on FADA retail data for September 2026, as reported by Autocar Professional. Summarised in our own words.
Tractor sales tell you how farm areas are doing. FADA reports 76,906 tractors retailed in September 2026, up 13.75% from 67,612 a year ago but down 12.58% from 87,977 in August. Tractors were the only one of the six categories FADA tracks that fell month on month.
Why the dip
FADA cites a later festive calendar and a patchy monsoon. Rural tractor retail rose 15.56% on last year but fell 13.27% from August. Between April and September 2026, 5,56,862 tractors were sold, up 19.81%.
Construction equipment bounced back
Wheeled construction equipment, such as backhoe loaders, rose to 6,486 units, up 38% on last year and 25.55% on August. JCB India led with 3,460 units, a 53.35% share. Action Construction Equipment had 9.44% and Escorts Kubota 6.65%.
Outlook
FADA expects festive demand to move into October, with Navratri from 11 to 20 October, and says rural spending and infrastructure goods movement should support sales from October to December.
