Most mechanics in India learn on the job, from a senior at a garage. That works, but it also means few have any formal certificate. A study by NCAER, based on the government's PLFS 2022-23 survey and cited by a current-affairs explainer, puts numbers on it.

What this means

Skill learned at a garage is valuable. But when almost every repair worker has no certificate, a recognised certificate becomes a way to stand out, especially when applying to authorised service centres, fleet operators and EV companies, which often ask for formal training.
