Based on a TeamLease Services projection reported by Autocar Pro on 21 September 2023 (a projection made in 2023). Summarised in our own words.
In September 2023, staffing firm TeamLease Services projected that India's logistics sector would add about 10 million jobs by 2027 and grow at about 12% a year. This is an older projection, but it explains a trend that has continued: more goods are moving, and more people are needed to move them.
What was driving it
- The government's production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes
- Strong domestic and export production
- Rising incomes and lower inflation
- Third-party logistics (3PL) business models
- Rising rural demand
- A shift from unorganised to organised operators
Roles named in the report
Supply chain managers, logistics specialists, distribution managers and warehouse managers. On the ground, the sector also employs large numbers of drivers, loaders, pickers and packers, and delivery staff.
What to do if you want a logistics job
- Get a valid driving licence of the right class for the vehicle you want to drive.
- Learn to use a smartphone for scanning, routes and delivery proof.
- Look for employers who give a written appointment letter and pay through a bank account.
The report did not give an official count of today's logistics workforce. Treat the 10 million as a projection.
