Based on Controller General of Accounts data for April-September 2026, reported on 30 October 2026. Summarised in our own words.
The Centre's fiscal deficit, the gap between what it spends and what it earns, was Rs 7.14 lakh crore in the first six months of FY27 (April to September 2026). That is 42.1% of the full-year target of Rs 16.96 lakh crore, according to data from the Controller General of Accounts reported on 30 October.
The main numbers
- Total receipts were Rs 18.35 lakh crore, up about 6% from a year earlier.
- Total spending was Rs 25.50 lakh crore, up nearly 11%.
- Net tax revenue was Rs 12.76 lakh crore, up nearly 4%.
- Capital spending, which pays for roads, railways and other assets, was about Rs 6.5 lakh crore, up about 13%. Business Standard says September capital spending fell 3% from a year earlier.
A year ago the deficit had used up nearly 37% of its full-year target at this point, Business Standard reports. The government has lowered the FY27 target to 4.3% of GDP from 4.4% in FY26.
What this means for you
- Government capital spending funds construction and infrastructure work, which is a large source of jobs for labourers, drivers and site supervisors.
- Slower tax growth than spending growth is something to watch. It can limit how much the government spends later in the year.
The first half of the year is not the full picture. Tax receipts and spending are not spread evenly across the months.
